Softball: Centreville 3, O’Connell 2

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links to the left to access a full photo gallery, dozens of video highlights and a video interview with Wildcat senior standout Jessica Ferrick!

Centreville Coach Rich Ferrick stood with his assistant coaches as his team circled up and took a seat in the outfield grass a few feet away from him.

The girls chatted and giggled with delight until Ferrick, after several minutes, turned to face them.

When quiet finally settled over them, Ferrick shook his head and said simply: “Wow.”

The giggling returned, and a few celebratory cheers followed.

“I don’t know what to say … and that doesn’t usually happen,” continued Ferrick, whose team rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat traditional WCAC powerhouse O’Connell, 3-2. “But understand that we’ve said from Day 1 that the potential here is just limitless. You guys can do anything you put your minds to.

“That is a very good team over there that you just beat. So you know you can do it. It’s all about heart and determination … and you had it tonight.”

Trailing 2-0 entering the final half-inning of play, the Wildcats (12-5 overall) showed incredible patience at the plate.

Freshman second baseman Courtney Burke led off the inning with a walk, junior first baseman Katie Sokol reached on an error and sophomore pinch hitter Karen Johnson singled to shallow right field to load the bases with no outs. Freshman right fielder Kara Love — the team’s No. 9 batter — then walked to score Centreville’s first run of the game.

Longtime Knights’ Coach Tommy Orndorff, whose team slipped to 15-3, made a pitching change, but the result was more of the same. Centreville senior catcher Victoria Marvin, the Wildcats’ leadoff batter, walked in the next at-bat to plate the game-tying run.

That’s when things got even more tense.

Wildcat freshman shortstop Lexi Murdock hit a ground ball back to reliever Sarah Eidt in the pitching circle and Eidt not only got the force out at home plate, but O’Connell sophomore catcher Sophie Giaquinto also threw Murdock out at first base to complete the double-play.

Centreville sophomore left fielder Cara Donovan walked in the next at-bat to again load the bases … this time, though, with two outs.

Next at the plate — and with everything on the line — was Wildcat senior pitcher Jessica Ferrick. Ferrick, the team’s clean-up batter, had singled in her first at-bat, struck out in her second and was intentionally walked in her third.

“When it’s your kid getting up to the plate it’s a whole different feeling,” Coach Ferrick said of his daughter. “And you’re just praying the poor kid comes through because you know how they’re going to feel when they get home if they don’t … and you’ve got to live with them.

“But then again, you want your kid to be there when something good happens, too. So you want them to have that kind of opportunity.”

And Jessica Ferrick certainly made the most of it.

Ferrick fired a hard-hit, ground ball up the middle to score the game-winning run, and was embraced first by Marvin and then by the rest of her teammates.

Her father offered only a firm fist pump in his daughters’ direction.

“With this group I don’t know what to think sometimes,” Coach Ferrick said. “They’ve done some amazing things this year, but they’ve also done some thing that weren’t so amazing.

“But the one thing about this group is they never every quit on me. So I always know there’s a chance something good can happen.

“And wow, was this special here tonight. We’ve had some very exciting games over the years with O’Connell and this was just another one of those. I couldn’t be happier for the girls.”

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 27

1. Robinson (8-0-1) — LW: 1
The Rams beat Westfield and Yorktown last week by a combined 7-1, but face only more tests in the final week of the season. Robinson travels to No. 9 Oakton on Tuesday and plays No. 8 Stone Bridge on May 8.
2. Broad Run (9-0-1) — LW: 2
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 37-2 this year, including 15-0 in the last week. Broad Run has five Division I signees and will face Heritage (9-2-1) on Tuesday, Briar Woods (6-3-1) on Wednesday and Loudoun County (5-4-2) on Friday.
3. Loudoun Valley (8-0-0) — LW: 3
The Vikings have torched their first eight opponents, winning by a
combined 36-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District. Loudoun Valley faces Stonewall Jackson, No. 10 Battlefield and Osbourn on Friday.
4. W.T. Woodson (9-1-1) — LW: 4
The Cavaliers had a trio of 3-0 wins last week, including one on the road against No. 7 McLean on Tuesday. Woodson, though, will be tested in the final week with a pair of non-district games. It hosts No. 6 West Springfield — winners of eight-straight games — on Thursday before hosting No. 9 Oakton on Monday. The combined records of those two opponents: 15-2-1.
5. Chantilly (8-1-1) — LW: 5
The
Chargers
beat the then-No. 7 Cougars, 2-1, on Friday. Chantilly has
outscored its opponents 30-6 this year, but closes with a brutal schedule. It faces No. 8 Stone Bridge at home
on Wednesday, No. 7 McLean on the road on Thursday and Centreville next week.
6. West Springfield (8-1-1) — LW: 8

The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won eight consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 8 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 32-0, including an 8-0 win over then-No. 10 South County last week. It faces No. 4 W.T. Woodson on Thursday, which will be covered by DigitalSports.
7. McLean (9-1-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 44 goals this season,
while allowing just nine. McLean fell to No. 4 Woodson on Tuesday, 3-0, but rebounded with back-to-back wins over Langley, 2-0 (article and highlights HERE), and Marshall, 5-0. It faces No. 5 Chantilly on Thursday.
8. Stone Bridge (7-2-2) — LW: 9
The
Bulldogs have won six games in a row by a combined 23-3, and all were district wins. Stone Bridge’s
two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 7 McLean, 2-1. It closes the season with
back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly — to be played this Wednesday — and No. 1 Robinson on May 8.
9. Oakton (7-1-0) — LW: 7
The Cougars have outscored their opponents by a collective 37-5. But last week, Oakton suffered its first loss to No. 5 Chantilly, 2-1, before rebounding to beat Centreville, 5-1. It faces No. 1 Robinson at home tonight.
10. Battlefield (6-2-1) — LW: N/A
The Bobcats beat Culpeper, 8-0, in their only game last week. But a match-up with unbeaten — and untested — No. 3 Loudoun Valley looms huge in Purcellville on Wednesday.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Centreville (5-3-1)
Heritage (9-2-1)

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Hovland Header
— Robinson senior Annie Hovland slams home this corner kick from senior Jensen Smith via header in the 16th minute of the No. 1 Rams’ 2-0 win over the No. 3 Chargers.
Ein Oop to Kabelac — Churchill junior Zoe Kabelac scores one of her five goals
on an alley-oop pass from Sophia Ein. Kabelac led No. 9 Churchill to a 12-11
win over Walter Johnson.
Blackout — Bobcat senior Brittany Black struck out 11 Vikings on Thursday. Check below for more from this game.
Grimm Comeback — Centreville senior Dan Grimm makes up 20 meters in the final lap to pull away from Edison senior Leoule Degfae in the 1600-meter race at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational on Saturday.

No. 10 –Liddle League
Prince William County, Virginia
— Battlefield sophomore 3B Bailey Liddle stepped to the plate with the bases full of Bobcats in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit a walk-off infield single to lift Battlefield — ranked No. 12 in the nation in the USA Today/NFCA Fast-Pitch Poll — over Loudoun Valley, 1-0, on Thursday.

No. 9 –Ley’ing Out
Prince William County, Virginia
— In a match between No. 1 Osbourn Park and No. 3 Battlefield, Yellow Jack junior goalkeeper Dylan Leygraaf leaped for this top-shelf save of a well-placed shot by Bobcat senior Franco Buzzalino to preserve a 0-0 draw in a pivotal Cedar Run District game.

No. 8 — 4-6-3 Saves Shutout
S.M.A.C., Maryland — In the bottom of the seventh inning, Patuxent senior pitcher Joey Mindick held a 3-0 lead, but allowed Chopticon to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, though, Mindick forced this 4-6-3 double play to close out his complete-game, shutout win.

No. 7 –– Rainy Goals
Jennens Excuse-Me Game-Winner

Loudoun County, Virginia
— With the score tied against Dulles District foe Potomac Falls, Broad Run sophomore Andrew Jennens hits this well-placed — albeit admittedly accidental — 52nd-minute goal, which proved the game-winner, as the Spartans went on to win, 2-1.

If You Don’t Know, Now You Knowles
Northern Region, Virginia
— In a pivotal National District match, Yorktown and No. 10 Washington-Lee were still tied, 0-0, in the 78th minute when Patriot junior Logan Knowles struck this corner kick in the air and over the General goalkeeper for the last-minute, game-winning goal.

No. 6 –Cohen, Go In
Montgomery County, Maryland
— Wildcat senior attack Daniel Cohen — with his back to a defender and the cage — whips in a blind-sided goal as Walter Johnson beat Churchill, 8-6, on Friday.

No. 5 –Bed’Gnarly
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Terrible title, I know. Bowie senior pitcher Sarah Bednarik pitched a five-inning perfect game in the Bulldogs’ 26-0 win over the Mustangs. Bednarik retired all 15 Bladensburg batters in order, recording seven strikeouts, seven ground outs and one fly out.

No. 4 –Mendoza Sparks Comeback  1  2
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Trailing by two goals to Broad Run at halftime, No. 9 Park View leaned on a masterful second half by senior Pedro Mendoza in a 3-2, come-from-behind win. Mendoza scored the equalizer on a cracking shot from 30 yards away and chipped the Spartan keeper off a K.C. Onyeador assist in overtime for the game-winner.

No. 3 –North Point No-No
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Eagle seniors Keith Ryan and Tony Raza-Montes combined for a no-hitter as North Point beat Great Mills, 9-2, on Saturday. The no-hit performance came in the second game of the first doubleheader in the Eagles’ three-year history.

No. 2 –Wahl’k-Off
Northern Region, Virginia
— West Springfield junior ace Bobby Wahl blew a two-run lead to rival South County just two innings before he came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning in a tie game. Three pitches into his at-bat, Wahl had a Wahl’k-off solo home run to lift the Spartans over the Stallions, 4-3.

No. 1 — Three Mile Eiland
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Trailing by two runs to Surrattsville and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gwynn Park senior 1B Reggie Eiland crushed this offering over the left-field wall for a walk-off grand slam and an 11-9, Yellow Jacket win.

Bobcats Split Doubleheader with Northern Region Squads

Click on the “Photos” and “Videos”

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor

Spring Break stayed around just a little bit longer for the Battlefield boys lacrosse team as the Bobcats hosted the Northern Region’s Centreville and Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon to play their Spring Break tournament two weeks after it was postponed for inclement weather. Each team played two games on the sun-drenched afternoon, with all three finishing the day with a 1-1 record.

By the third game at 4 p.m., both the Bobcats and Majors were feeling the fatigue. Mount Vernon was coming off of a 9-8 win over the Wildcats, while the Bobcats were still smarting after a 12-8 loss to Centreville.

“For both teams, fatigue was a factor,” said Battlefield head coach Kevin Marsh, whose Bobcats beat Mount Vernon, 11-4. “We hustled all over [against Centreville] and we lost. In the second game, we needed to have some guts. I think that’s what we did.”

Mount Vernon head coach Dale Nalls agreed with Marsh without taking anything away from the Bobcats or letting his team off the hook for the loss.

“Maybe some fatigue played a part later on, but I want to give all the credit to Battlefield, they played us tough,” he said. “Our effort level could have been a lot better than it was. We are definitely better than what we showed in that second game.”

Corey Shumaker led the way for the Bobcats against Mount Vernon, recording three goals to bring his total on the day to a tournament-high six goals. Britt Hoover and Emery Bryan added two goals apiece, while four other Bobcats contributed a goal. The Majors were led by Brendan Doyle with two goals. Battlefield sophomore backup goalie Connor Mullins got the start against the Majors, allowing only one goal in the first half.

Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

GFA Elite beats local foe before taking on World

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Before Great Falls Academy Elite has to play some of the top teams amateur club teams from around the world, it got to face a familiar foe in the Freestate Soccer Academy from Bowie, Md.

The two teams have played four or five times in the past couple months. And according to forward K.C. Onyeador, GFA Elite has come out on top each time.

That pattern continued Monday as GFA Elite defeated its metro area foe, 2-0, at Trinity College in GFA’s first game in the International Amateur Soccer Tournament

Onyeador, who plays for Park View High School, scored his team’s second goal while National Pool player Dylan Bowman of James River broke what was a scoreless game with a  header goal three minutes into the second half.

“We hold the upper hand,” Bowman said of the rivalry with Freestate. “We knew we had some chances and knew we were going to get some second half goals. We just had to put them away.”

Bowman’s goal came off a cross from Robinson forward Koko Makumbi. The chipped cross found Bowman in traffic near the penalty stripe. His header wasn’t all that powerful but it was just inside the right post to give GFA a 1-0 lead.

“Dylan’s goal, that was a great goal,” Onyeador said. “The ball was over me and Dylan comes out of nowhere and puts it in the bottom corner.”

“Probably my first headed goal,” Bowman added.

Onyeador’s goal, off a nifty little pass from Bowman, was scored just 14 minutes later in the 62nd minute.

But now it’s on to literally more foreign competition for GFA Elite. The club will face Chivas de Corazon from Guadalajara, Mexico on Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers from Blackburn, England on Thursday.

“It’s good to get off to a good start because our next challenges are going to be pretty big,” Onyeador said.

GFA Elite Coach Ed Beach watched the two teams battle to a tie on Sunday.

“I was very, very, very impressed,” Beach said. “It seems they brought over their better players and we’ll have our hands more than full.”

A year ago today, Warren Williams — current Woodson coach — was midway through his ninth season at Centreville, where he compiled a 113-38-12 career record.

At that time, any insinuation he’d appear on the opposing sideline — coaching against the Wildcats — might have made Williams suspicious he was on the wrong end of an April Fools prank.

But in the first season captaining his new club, the Cavaliers remain unbeaten through six games, as sophomore Lindsey Heigh scored the game-winning goal three minutes into extra time to give Woodson a 2-1 win over Centreville — and the last laugh — on Wednesday.

“I was on the other side, so it was a little bit different,” said Williams, who won five Concorde District and two Northern Region titles in his tenure at Centreville. “The flag was on the different side. I coached all those kids and a little bit has changed, so that was weird.”

Added Cavalier senior Lindsey Ottavio, who scored her seventh goal of the year in the first minute: “We came out really pumped up, we wanted this. He didn’t really tell us anything different, but we wanted to prove that he made the right decision to come to Woodson.”

However, the Cavaliers were not as decisive in front of the Wildcat goal, aside from Ottavio’s 30th-second strike.

Possessions built up and Woodson mounting several scoring chances in the first quarter of the game, including a shot in the penalty area by Heigh that careened off the near post, but the Cavalier lead never increased.

As the Wildcats kept the game within reach, junior attacking midfielder Jenna Richmond emerged with her game-altering presence.

In the 30th minute, Richmond headed a corner kick over Woodson keeper Marlee Stynchula that would have surely found the net had it not been for the quick reactions of Cavalier senior Mary Beth Barham on the near post.

Then, after halftime, Richmond equalized when she stole the ball from a retreating defender and casually placed a shot in the upper-90 in the 47th minute, making it 1-1.

And had it not been for another Barham block, this time with her body at the top of the box, Richmond would have put Centreville ahead with an open-net goal in the 63rd minute.

“We’re going to get better; we’ve got a good nucleus,” first-year Wildcat coach Rob Olson said. “Jenna’s a very-high quality player. She’s got a lot of desire and good personal qualities: work ethic and wanting to be the best.”

Added Williams: “On a wet track and a muddy field, a player like Jenna is very dangerous… Everyone knows who Jenna is. She’s a really good player.”

Still, the Cavaliers’ organization in the attacking third and their magnetism to 50-50 balls paid dividends in extra time.

After a cross sailed through the box in the 83rd minute, Woodson maintained possession and a second ball was played in before getting deflected down just outside the six in a sea of Cavaliers. Heigh connected on the game-winner with her left foot.

With the win, Woodson improved to 5-0-1 and is tied with McLean (6-0-0) for first place in the Liberty District. Counting scrimmages, the Cavaliers have outscored their opponents 23-4 in eight games.

But Woodson, who is currently ranked No. 12 nationally by ESPNRise and only graduated four players from last year’s team that went 12-3-2, recognizes championships are not won for another two months.

That knowledge is first-hand, as two of its three losses in 2008 were to eventual state champion Robinson, including a 2-1 defeat in the regional semifinal on May 22.

“Coach Williams has always said not to be overly cocky,” said Ottavio, who scored 18 goals in 17 games last season. “We have a solid squad. We have a very deep bench; so many good players come to Woodson.

“We know each other off the field, so that helps the chemistry. I think we connect and read each other pretty well and we like playing together.”

Added Williams: “If we want to improve, if we want to go to the next level, we have to put teams away. We had them in the first 15 minutes. It should have been more than one [goal].

“We know that, it’s something we’ve talked about and that’s something we’re going to get better at doing.”
