Playoff Softball: Northern Region Quarterfinals

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Look below the story to find four separate video players filled with dozens of video highlights and interviews from all four Northern Region softball quarterfinal games.

Two things became quite apparent by the end of the Northern Region softball quarterfinal quadruple-header held at Falls Church High on a wonderfully hot — and long — Memorial Day.

The first is that Robinson, the defending regional champions, will not go down without a fight.

The second is that, this year, there is no tournament favorite. Each of Monday’s four winners — Herndon, Langley, Westfield and Robinson — showed flashes of brilliance in their quarterfinal victories.

And each, too, showed vulnerabilities.

Robinson, in Monday’s nightcap, watched a five-run lead evaporate into a two-run deficit in the top half of the sixth inning against Stone Bridge.

But the Rams didn’t stay down for long. Robinson rallied for three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to secure an 8-7 victory.

Rams’ senior pitcher Erin Henning, one of only a handful of returning starters from last year’s title-winning team, recovered nicely from a rough sixth inning in which the Bulldogs sent 13 batters to the plate and totaled seven runs on eight hits after only registering one hit in the previous five innings.

Henning blasted an RBI double to left field in the bottom half of the inning to score the game-tying run, and three batters later senior catcher Alex Powers singled in the game-winner.

Henning then went back to the pitching circle and promptly retired the last three Bulldog batters in order.

“We have to prove to everyone that we’re not an easy team to beat,” Henning said. “Earlier in the season they had kind of written us off because we started out rough, but we’ve really come back really hard and I think we’re playing to what we really are capable of.”

Robinson’s victory was the third one-run contest of the day, as Herndon defeated South County, 1-0, in the day’s opener and Langley defeated Centreville, 7-6 in eight innings, in the second game. The third contest was almost as tight — and certainly every bit as exciting — with Westfield besting McLean, 3-1.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Rynex, who recently returned to play from a broken right ankle, led the Hornets both offensively and defensively. Rynex totaled 12 strikeouts against the Stallions, and also earned the game’s lone RBI on a double down the left-field line in the first inning that scored senior Marra Hvozdovic, who reached on a leadoff single back to the South County pitcher.

“They both actually feel great,” Rynex said of the RBI and her 12 strikeouts. “But pitching is my love, so doing that … I loved it.”

Langley got two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to knot the score with Centreville at 6 and force an extra inning. There, it was senior centerfielder Lindsay Brown, who reached on a leadoff walk, who scored the game-winner on a Wildcat throwing error. Brown also opened the game’s scoring with a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the second inning.

“With 10 seniors on the team we were like, this could be one of the last games playing together, so we put all our effort in,” Brown said of going to extra innings. “And luckily we came out with the win. … Getting it in any way, that’s great.”

Westfield, which used three different pitchers to keep McLean off-balance at the plate, plated a single run in each of the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But the Highlanders kept fighting, and sat in a bases-loaded, two-out situation with senior catcher Alaura Maglio at the plate.

But when Westfield freshman pitcher Jackie Martinez got low and the ball escaped senior catcher Elizabeth Jones, it looked as if McLean would cut the lead to one run. Instead, Jones flew to the backstop to retrieve the passed ball and fired it to Martinez, who made the tag at home for the game’s final out.

“I was thinking that I should have stopped the ball, that I shouldn’t have let it go,” Jones said. “And then when I was chasing after it, I thought that [the runner] definitely had the base at home. But then I threw it and saw that she wasn’t there … Once [Jackie] got it, I was really excited.”

On Wednesday night at South County in the semifinal round, Herndon and Langley will meet at 5 p.m. followed by Westfield and Robinson at 7 p.m.. The two winners will not only advance to Friday’s regional title game at 6:30 p.m. at Yorktown, but will also earn automatic berths into the upcoming Virginia AAA state tournament.

Varsity Baseball: Fairfax 8, Centreville 6

By Sam Dowell
Fairfax High Senior, DigitalSports Intern

After being honored during the a pre-game ceremony, the seniors on Fairfax’s baseball team entertained the crowd with a pair of home runs and all eight of
the Rebels RBIs in what proved a festive, 8-6 victory for the home team.

“Tonight it was Senior Night,” Fairfax Coach Kevin Simonds said. “Parents were here, fans were here, it
was relaxed … a great night for baseball and it really showed in our
swings.”

And the Rebels were swinging all game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Fairfax
starting pitcher Lee Strutzel hit a bomb that cleared the left field
wall to put the Rebels ahead, 5-2.

“I just got a hold of one and it went
out,” Strutzel said.

And Fairfax wasn’t finished yet. Senior catcher Tyler Love hit an RBI
single that brought fellow senior Tommy Prioletti home, and then third
baseman Chris Cavalieri stepped up to the plate. Cavalieri imitated Strutzel and sent a fastball flying over the left
field wall for another home run, this one a two-run shot.

“I saw the
pitch and just took it,” Cavalieri said.

Added Simonds: “We always say you have to be relaxed. When you are relaxed you are
confident. When you are confident you execute. Good
things happen to those who sit back and are patient.”

The Rebels didn’t just execute hits on offense, but also strategically
executed a rundown in which Prioletti purposely stranded himself
between first and second base. While Prioletti occupied the defense, David
Schenaker
sneaked home and scored a run.

At the end of four innings of play, the score was 8-2 in favor of the Rebels, but
the Wildcats stayed resilient. Led by Chris Campbell and Will Fuka,
Centreville countered with four unanswered run in the final three innings, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Rebels, who will head into the Concorde District tournament with momentum on their side.

“I think we can really pull it off and do some damage,” Strutzel said of the upcoming playoffs. “We’re going to be a Cinderella story.”

Varsity Softball: Centreville 7, Herndon 0

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Look for the video player below the story for dozens of highlights from Monday’s game. **

On a night where Centreville seniors Megan deLorimier, Haley Morton, Kimberly Oden and Brianne Pease were honored for their numerous contributions to the Wildcats’ softball program, it was junior third baseman Kirsten Sepulveda who drew the night’s biggest cheers.

Only, her teammates in the dugout weren’t screaming for Kirsten. Not for Sepulveda either. Nor did they even cheer for “1” —  the black number emblazoned on the back of her light blue, home jersey.

They, instead, were chanting for the Hulk.

“It’s because of my beastly size,” giggled the 5-feet-6-inch, 115-pound Sepulveda, who said there is even a little photo of the Incredible Hulk that her teammates carry and place above her bag at each game. “It’s an inside joke, I guess.”

But Monday night, the petite Sepulved lived up to her large nickname in what proved a 7-0 victory for the host Wildcats.

Centreville broke open the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI by junior catcher Victoria Marvin that scored freshman shortstop Cara Donovan, who reached on a single. Junior first baseman Jessica Ferrick, who reached on a walk, then dove to the plate on a dropped third strike for a 2-0 lead.

But the Wildcats weren’t done there.

Sepulveda, the team’s No. 6 batter, blasted a hard-hit double to right/center field that scored two more runs and opened the flood gates. Centreville (16-2 overall, 11-0 Concorde District) added another run in the fifth on an RBI by Ferrick and two more in the sixth on RBIs by deLorimier and Oden to pick up its eighth consecutive victory.

Herndon, meanwhile, fell to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in league play.

“I’d like us to come out hitting right from the start, and it’s taking us a little while to get there,” Wildcats’ Coach Rich Ferrick said. “But I really can’t complain because when the bats get going, they get going real good. The top of our order has been real sweet, and Kirsten really had an awesome game tonight, but she’s noted for that. She’ll come up with that big hit when we really need it.

“It’s nice that I’ve got three or four or five kids that I know what they can do, but my 6-7-8-9 … those are the kids that are going to make a difference for us. When they do something great, good things are going to happen for us.”

Pease, who alternates with Ferrick between the pitching circle and first base, went the distance for the Wildcats, yielding zero runs on three hits while fanning eight batters, including striking out the side in the fifth inning.

“We usually like to use both pitchers, but this was senior night and this was a game that, hopefully, we wanted Bri to remember and to be special for her,” Rich Ferrick said. “But they’ve been a great one-two punch for us. When a team thinks they’re getting used to one, here comes the other. Could both of them go pitch for another team and go seven innings every game? Yeah, they could. And I know it’s been tough on them not doing that. But I think they’re starting to understand the logic behind what we’re trying to do.

“Bri moves the ball around a lot, and Jessica throws really hard and has a good change-up … and that makes it so tough on the hitters we face.”

Herndon strung all three hits together in the third inning to load the bases — courtesy of a double by freshman third baseman Julia Miller and singles by senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic and senior pitcher Katie Briggs — but proved unable to plate a run in its lone threat. The only other Hornet to reach base did so on a second-inning walk.

“It’s just amazing,” Pease said. “We’ve gone through the entire season doing absolutely fantastic … the team has come together, everyone is amazing in the field and at the plate, and we get up for the games. But to win on senior night is just the cherry on top. Most of us have been on varsity for four years, so we’ve watched all of the other seniors go. And now, it’s our turn. And to win makes it that much better.”
