Posted in Uncategorized0 Comments Boys’ Basketball: Westfield 69, Centreville 34Posted on 08 January 2009 by . By Angela Watts Westfield Coach Doug Ewell looked utterly relaxed Tuesday night. He said at no time this year has he had any trouble going home, without worry, and falling fast asleep. In part, it is his team’s 11-1 record this season that has eased all tension, including Tuesday’s 69-34 thumping of visiting Centreville. But, more than that, it’s also the camaraderie his Bulldogs have shown this season. “We just have so much fun together,” Ewell said. “They are really a close, tight-knit group. And that’s been probably the best part about this whole thing. There is no drama. They are really focused on each other and they play hard for each other … it’s so gratifying.” Instead of complaints or whining, Ewell said he gets text messages from his players that say things like, “Great game, Coach. That was so much fun tonight.” And, at 11-1, why wouldn’t it be? Westfield, which has rattled off nine consecutive victories since falling to King William High School in early December, is overwhelming opponents with its athleticism, depth and discipline. Tuesday night against Centreville 12 different Bulldogs scored — and five of them knocked down three-pointers — despite the fact that Westfield totaled only eight fourth-quarter points. Leading the way with 10 points a piece were returning senior guard Jay Jackson, senior forward Chris Kearney and newcomer Jordan Anderson, a senior transfer from Annandale who shined at running back for the Bulldogs’ football team this past fall and is now relishing his role as the Bulldogs’ sixth-man. “Jordan brings athleticism, speed and he jumps out of the gym,” Ewell said. “He does a lot for us. And, you know, he could easily start, but he likes his role and he enjoys it, so it’s perfect. “We lost seven out of eight of our top players from last year, but this group … they all are accountable for each other. The only thing they care about is making sure everyone is on the same page. And it shows.” The big challenge looming for the Bulldogs is a Jan. 16 date with rival Chantilly, which also boasts and 11-1 overall record with its only loss to the Landon School. Both Westfield and Chantilly are unbeaten in Concorde District play. “I’m extremely surprised, no, absolutely shocked at how we’ve started this season,” Ewell said, laughing. “But we all know that Herndon and Chantilly are the class acts of our district, and we’re just trying to keep pace. That’s all we’re trying to do. “We know that Chantilly is really high up … we’re just trying to be the best we can be.” So far, that’s been awfully good.
