** Check below the story for complete highlights from Tuesday’s game.

Centreville shut out Westfield, 5-0, Tuesday night to remain undefeated in Concorde District play at 10-0. The Wildcats (15-2 overall) have not lost to a Northern Region opponent this season and thus have have already clinched the top seed in the upcoming district tournament, which is set to begin May 12.

Senior Brianne Pease led the way for Centreville in both the cirlce and the batter’ box. Pease pitched the first four innings and did not allow a hit while striking out four Westfield batters. Then, in the top half of the third inning, Pease stroked a single that scored seniors Jessica Ferrick and Victoria Marvin to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage.

Centreville add another run in the fourth when senior Megan deLorimier hit a lead-off double and later scored on a sacrafice by junior Shanna Tutt and got two more in the seventh after Marvin doubled to scored Ferrick and later scored on scored herself on a passed ball.

Westfield senior Anna Munizza and freshman Frankie Martinez both reached base in the fifth inning on what were the only two Bulldog hits of the game. The rally, however, was short-lived as Wildcat senior second baseman Hayley Morton fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner and threw to first base to complete the double play.

Westfield has lost four straight and will attempt to get back on track Friday night at Herndon. The Bulldogs won the previous meeting with the Hornets, 2-0.

The Wildcats will attempt to complete the regular season sweep of the Concorde District when they host Herndon on Monday and then travel to face Farifax on Wednesday.

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Briggs earned Velocity’s Featured Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over visiting Robinson in eight innings on Thursday.

Not only did Briggs throw an excellent game — striking out 13 Rams’ batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second inning and fanning two batters in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings — she was provided the game-winning hit.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Briggs took an outside pitch to deep right field to score senior second baseman
Chelsea Roseberry for a 1-0, walk-off
victory. Roseberry had reached on a single in the game’s first
additional inning and moved to second when senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic drew a walk.

With the victory Herndon improved to 10-3 overall on the season with six regular-season games remaining.

Boys’ Soccer: Westfield 1, Centreville 0

  By Phil Murphy
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Look below the story for complete video highlights from Thursday’s game.**

With the head referee standing in the center circle and both teams positioned to begin the game, Westfield seniors Kyle Guthrie and A.J. Sheta posed with Centreville senior Brandon Chu for a photo from the sidelines.

This pre-game procession is an annual ritual for these cross-town rivals. And unless the teams meet in the Concorde District tournament, the Bulldogs’ 1-0 road win over the Wildcats on Thursday will be the last time the three friends meet at the high-school level.

“Me, Kyle and Brandon have been playing together since before we could walk,” said Sheta, who is a teammate of the pair on Northern Virginia Royals club team. “It’s fun, because now you get to talk to him after the game and rag on him a little bit.

“Other than that, we’re still friends.”

The three played end-to-end play in the opening minutes, pacing their respective teams, before Sheta readied to change the course of the game. In the 25th minute, the Bulldogs drew a free kick just outside of the Wildcats’ 18-yard box.

Westfield acted quickly and while Centreville looked to get organized and ensure every man in the box was marked, Guthrie rolled the ball short to Sheta, who was standing a few paces to his right.

Sheta took one touch to his right and fired a shot past Wildcat goal keeper Steven Linane for the game’s only goal.

“I come creeping up from the side and, if they don’t mark me, Kyle will scream,” Sheta said. “He’ll pretend like he’s going to cross the ball and he just lay it off. It was just a good hit.”

Added Westfield coach Tom Torres: “He had the same goal against Oakton — the same exact goal — except it went upper-90, so I told him after the game it wasn’t as good as his Oakton goal. It was the same set piece.”

Centreville came into the game hoping to crowd the midfield with its 4-5-1 formation and threaten the Westfield goal with a counter-attack. They never strayed from that lineup, despite trailing throughout.

“We knew what both teams had coming in here,” said Wildcats’ Coach Brian Cochran, in his first year replacing Jac Cicala (Robinson). “We were going to come in, score what we could and try to counter-attack. We played that way last year under a different coach and it worked well and we were going to try the same thing.

“We had a couple chances and that’s all you’re going to get on something like that. We had a couple chances and we just didn’t finish it.”

Although the Wildcats (3-2-2) failed to score, it was only the third time this season the Bulldogs (7-0-1) scored fewer than two goals.

“We came into the game thinking that Centreville was going to come at us,” said Torres, whose Bulldogs held a 20-4 advantage on shots-on-goal. “In the past, they’ve always sat back a little bit and exposed us on counterattack. We thought they might come at us first, but they did sit back.

“It kind of put us in a situation where we have to be patient and kind of pick our spots. The middle of the field wasn’t working so we were trying to get the guys to use the width … As we started to use the width, it created things. It created that free kick that led to the goal.”

Thursday’s game was the first in a series of difficult tests for both teams. Each of Westfield’s next four opponents — and four of Centreville’s next five — boast a .500 record or better.

“We’ve got Robinson coming up, we’ve got Herndon coming up, we’ve got Lake Braddock coming up,” Cochran said. “We’ve got to figure it out somewhere.

“But I think it boosted their confidence a little bit knowing that we can play with a full-on team like this.”

VHSL Announces New Redistricting Plan for Northern Region

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Two current members of the Northern Region — and two who would like to be — plead their cases before the Virginia High School League’s Redistricting and Reclassification committee Monday in Charlottesville.

But only the two current Northern Region schools — Hayfield and Stone Bridge — won the initial battle.

Hayfield, which is currently a member of the Patriot District, appealed its
continued placement there and requested to be moved to the National
District. And Stone Bridge, which currently a member of the Liberty District, appealed its
proposed move to the Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and
requested to remain a member of the Liberty District.

Both requests were granted.

That was not the case for Heritage (AA Dulles District) and Loudoun Valley (AAA Cedar Run) of
Loudoun County, which appealed their proposed placement into the Cedar Run
District and, instead, requested to join the Northern Region. Heritage
asked to join as a member of the Liberty District; Loudoun Valley as a
member of the Concorde District.

Both of those requests were denied.

The only other change to the current alignment is Fairfax, which had previously been
moved out of the Concorde District, where it currently plays, and into the Liberty District.

A school still has one last opportunity to appeal the decisions that were made on Monday. It may appeal the R&R committee’s decision to the VHSL’s Executive Committee. No hearing will be held, but the Executive Committee will review the written record of the original appeal and issue its decision. The Executive Committe will meet May 7, and the final plan will go into effect July 1, 2009.

As it stands today, the most recent proposal for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is as follows:

Concorde District
Centreville (2283)
Chantilly (2835)

Velocity Player of the Week — April 14

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** DigitalSports videographer Phil Murphy sits down for a one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Player of the Week, found in a video player just below the story.

Langley senior center fielder Lindsay Brown blasted a two-run,
home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth inning last Thursday to
break open the tie and lead the Saxons to a 9-6 victory at Madison.

Langley (9-1, 4-0 Liberty) entered Monday’s district game at Stone Bridge having won eight consecutive ball games, including outscoring Thomas Jefferson, South Lakes and W.T. Woodson by a combined total of 79-3 in the three games prior to facing the Warhawks.

Brown, whose younger sister Brooke, a sophomore, picked up the win from the pitching circle on Thursday, has been a big part of the reason for success. Lindsay totaled seven hits during the teams’ 4-1 run through its spring tournament in Myrtle Beach, and has been on fire at the plate ever since.

Softball: Centreville 2, Herndon 0

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below the story for complete video highlights from Mondays game.

Centreville used the dominate pitching combination of senior Brianne Pease and junior Jessica Ferrick plus the first career home run for freshman Cara Donovan to defeat Herndon, 2-0, on Monday night.

Pease struck out three batters — allowing only two hits while retiring 11 of the last 12 Hornet batters she faced — before exiting the game after five innings of work. Herndon senior Jasmine Craun accounted for one of the two hits against Pease, ripping a single to left field to lead off the bottom half of the fourth inning. But the Wildcats’ defense ended the threat with a 1-6-3 double play.

Ferrick closed the game out, striking out two without yielding a hit.

Herndon got an outstanding pitching performance from senior Katie Briggs as well.

Briggs pitched the complete game, striking out 10 batters while giving up only three hits. Unfortunately for Briggs, all three came off Donovan’s bat, including her first career solo home run to lead off the sixth inning. Centreville’s second run came later in the same inning but was unearned.

“It was pretty exciting,” Donovan said. “As a freshman it’s a pretty big deal. It’s my first career high school home run.”

Centreville has won nine of its 11 games this season and will host Fairfax on Wednesday night. Herndon travels to Chantilly on April 22.
