Black Shuts Down Wildcats in Battlefield Win

Click here to become a fan of DigitalSports on Facebook.

By Paul Frommelt

Prince William Content Editor

Brittany Black had complete trust that her catcher would make a play. Black, pitching in the Battlefield softball team’s opening game of the season against Centreville, was fighting to maintain the Bobcats’ one-run lead in the fifth inning. The Wildcats had the bases loaded with two outs when senior cleanup hitter Victoria Marvin, who already had two hits in the game, popped the ball up in foul territory.

As Black expected, Courtney Liddle was there to make a diving catch to end the inning.

“I knew as soon as that ball was in the air, she had it,” said Black. “It was a relief
as soon as I saw where it was, because I knew that she had it.”

Liddle’s catch helped the Bobcats come away with a 4-1 victory against the Wildcats.

Trust has been a key component for Black and Liddle’s success. Entering their fourth year together at Battlefield, Black and Liddle systematically took down Wildcat batters, recording nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits over the final six innings of the game.

“From them working together from four years at Battlefield, they can make those adjustments instantly when they see something,” said Battlefield head coach Joe Schelzo.

After allowing three consecutive hits in the first innning, Black and Liddle quickly made the necessary adjustments.

“If they get a hit, I just get mad,” said Black. “My rule to myself is to not let them have another hit for the rest of the game.”

The Bobcats’ senior pitcher held true to that rule — except for against Marvin, who roped singles in her first two at bats. When the Wildcats’ senior shortstop came up in the fifth after a walk, an error and a single loaded up the bases, Black and Liddle knew that they had to choose their pitches carefully.

“Me and Courtney have grown up together. We’ve grown that trust,” said Black. “I know
what she is going to call and she knows what I want her to call.”

Added Schelzo: “We are so experienced now and we have come to rely on Brittany throwing ‘the pitch’ at the right moment. It’s early in the season and to be able
to deliver — that’s key.”

Battlefield gained that experience with a lengthy 2008 postseason. The defending Cedar Run and Northwest Region champions advanced to the AAA VHSL state championships last year, finishing the year with a 25-4 record, the best mark in the program’s history.

Hoping to keep his squad sharp, Schelzo loaded up the Bobcats’ schedule early in the season, which includes a double-header on Saturday against Halifax County and Franklin County.

“[Centreville is] a good-quality team, quality coach and quality players. It is a good way to start it off,” said Schelzo. “You kind of try to open up your schedule with a game that you feel
pretty comfortable winning. It’s turned out two years in a row [that we
play Centreville]. It might be a different season if you schedule a
tough game to start the season and you lose it. That puts you in a
different from of mind.”

The Bobcats beat Centreville, 2-0, in nine innings to start their 2008 season.

“It feels just like one of those state championship games,” said third baseman Bailey Liddle, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. “It was really great to get the win.”

Liddle recorded three of the Bobcats’ eight hits on the day against Centreville pitcher Jessica Ferrick. Senior Jessica Anglin added two hits, including a two-out RBI single in the 6th inning to give the Bobcats a little bit of breathing room.

“What do you produce with two outs and a runner in scoring position? That’s a stat that I look very closely at,” said Schelzo of Anglin’s clutch hit. “We could have had a lot more comfortable wins [last year] if we had done that. Seeing that out of the eight hole, that’s big-time.”
